Common questions
What is the tax-free threshold?
For Australian residents, the first of income in a year is taxed at 0%. You can claim it with one employer at a time, which is why a second job usually has tax taken out from the first dollar.
Why does a bonus or extra pay seem taxed more?
Tax taken out of each pay (PAYG withholding) treats the extra as if you earned it all year, so it is taxed at a higher rate. The tax you actually owe is worked out for the whole year when you lodge your return, so the withholding can be higher or lower than the final amount.
What is the Medicare levy?
For most residents it is of taxable income, with reductions or exemptions at low incomes. It is included in the tax shown on this page.
Why is my payslip different from this estimate?
Payslips use the ATO's weekly withholding tables, which round and do not include every offset or deduction. This page shows the tax for the year and the pay-slip style figures side by side. Differences settle in your tax return.
Is the super part of my take-home pay?
No. Super is paid by your employer into your fund on top of your salary (unless your salary says it includes super), so it is not in your take-home figure.

Where the difference comes from
After tax, side by side
The same package as an employee and as a contractor. Both use the same tax tables as the take-home tab.

How many days you are booked
What a day rate has to cover
- Your own super. A contractor sets it aside themselves. If the contract is mainly for your labour, the other side may still have to pay it for you.
- No paid days off. Public holidays, annual leave and sick days are unpaid, and so are any gaps between contracts.
- Tax in instalments. No tax is taken out for you, so you work out and set aside your own tax.
- GST. You must register once your turnover reaches $75,000 a year. You then charge GST on top and pass it on.
- Insurance and running costs. Cover for your work, equipment, software, an accountant.
Employee or contractor is decided by how the work is done, not by what the contract calls it. See the Fair Work contractor fact sheet. General information, not advice.
Underpaid? Here is the order to do it in.
Most underpayment starts as an error. Keep a record and raise it in writing.
Check the numbers

Ask politely

Escalate if needed
